According to Professor Attilio Scienza, the term autochthonous no longer refers to the place of origin of a grape variety, but instead to the place where that species manifests itself in the best possible way. In light of recent scientific developments, it’s now time to redefine the meaning of autochthony. If we take the term to mean “vine born in that place”, Italy has fewer than a dozen native vines. Instead, we should consider autochthony to mean the place where a particular grape variety manifests itself in the best possible way. The true meaning of autochthony is not linked to the place of origin but to where the vine best expresses its genetic potential.
Over millennia, vines have co-evolved alongside their habitat, adapting specifically to local ecosystems, climate, and surrounding flora. As a light-loving species, vines evolved to climb trees to reach the sunlight. Vitis vinifera itself originated from wild, woody lianas that grew along riverbanks in deciduous forests. For thousands of years, the cultivation of grapevines has been intertwined with human civilization, with early viticultural techniques, such as the “married vine” (training vines up trees), mimicking their natural growth habitats.
