In recent years, investments in innovation have been one of the main drivers of competitiveness for Italian companies.
Data compiled by Intesa Sanpaolo’s Research Department show that between 2016 and 2024, investments in software and databases increased by 45%, while investment in research and development grew by more than 27%. This acceleration has contributed to modernising Italy’s productive fabric and to promoting the adoption of digital tools, including among small and medium-sized enterprises.
2026 marks the beginning of a new phase
For companies across the agri-food value chain, and particularly those in the wine sector, the super-deduction opens up a particularly broad range of opportunities under the 2026 Budget Law: interconnected machinery, advanced sensors, robotics, solutions for monitoring production processes and quality, advanced software for integrated supply chain management, and platforms for monitoring environmental impacts. These are complemented by investments in renewable energy generation plants and energy storage systems, which are becoming increasingly relevant in a context of volatile energy costs. These measures make it possible to improve traceability, optimise resource use and strengthen business resilience.
The role of Intesa Sanpaolo
Intesa Sanpaolo, through its Agribusiness Division, within the Banca dei Territori Division headed by Stefano Barrese, supports the investment and development projects of Italian agri-food companies and, over the past six years, has provided more than €14 billion in financing, continuing to support the sector’s competitive strategies also through extraordinary finance transactions.
“Italian agri-food companies are facing a period of profound transformation. Digital innovation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and energy independence are strategic drivers of competitiveness that the new super-deduction can effectively accelerate,” emphasises Massimiliano Cattozzi, Head of the Agribusiness Division, Banca dei Territori Division, Intesa Sanpaolo. “Our goal is to support companies, including those in the wine sector, in accessing the incentive, assisting them in developing projects capable of generating value, efficiency and sustainable long-term growth throughout the entire agri-food value chain. This approach is an integral part of our role as a bank that gives back value to the communities and territories in which it operates every day.”
Intesa Sanpaolo offers an integrated support model combining specialist consulting, financial solutions and operational assistance throughout the investment process. Through its Innovation Desks, network of specialists and Innovation Center, the bank supports companies in defining the most effective technology strategies, assisting them in selecting the right solutions and assessing the economic and financial sustainability of their projects.
Financing solutions can cover up to 100% of the investment, including through leasing instruments and flexible medium- to long-term arrangements. At the same time, advisory services are provided in collaboration with qualified partners, including Tinexta Innovation Hub, for eligibility verification, preparation of the technical documentation and management of the incentive application process. These are complemented by training programmes, tech scouting services and platforms dedicated to managing ESG objectives and cybersecurity.
