Welcome back to discovering and tasting wine in person as well as developing relationships. And Vinitaly does it in style with OperaWine - the event organized in collaboration with Wine Spectator magazine dedicated to Italian wine excellence. The event scheduled on 19 June celebrates its tenth anniversary in Verona and marks the "in-person" restart of relationships for the international wine community. To do this, in addition to the one hundred producers selected for 2021, Vinitaly and Wine Spectator have involved everyone nominated at least once during the ten editions held so far.
One hundred and eighty six Italian companies selected by the American magazine will therefore meet this year in a new location. This great tasting will now be held - not the least for social distancing purposes - in the Gallerie Mercatali, the recently-restored and fascinating industrial archaeology venue opposite the Verona Exhibition Centre itself.
On entering the Gallerie Mercatali, visitors will be faced by a predefined tasting itinerary that will help them discover regions, grape varieties and production styles combined with the possibility of exploring and expanding knowledge of the wines involved - together with the history of their producers - through an on-line catalogue. This very large venue ensures the organization of the event in total safety for guests and exhibitors, in full compliance with all current health regulations.
The protagonist of these ten years is the great diversity of "Vineyard Italy" and the presence of all regions and their wine excellence. Wine-making in Italy is thereby represented by cellars from all over the peninsula which, despite differences in production style, size and territory, all share very high quality. One hundred and eighty six labels from 20 Italian regions will be available for tasting: red wines dominate with 134 labels, followed at some distance by whites (32), sparkling wines (17) and dessert wines (3).
The event will involve two "shifts" and is invitation-only for journalists and specialist operators.
OperaWine marks the return of events attended in person for the world of wine and June is precisely at the heart of a calendar designed to relaunch Italian wine. The event will be preceded on 11 June by the twenty-fifth edition of the Vinitaly Design International Packaging Competition and Vinitaly 5StarsWines - the Book (16-18 June). Yet appointments by no means end here: Vinitaly Preview is scheduled on Sunday 20 June and Vinitaly International Academy courses will be held 20-23 June.
