Le Pievi del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: Identità Territoriale in Evoluzione

Description

The “Pieve” designation of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was born from a shared path involving all the wineries of the denomination, developed through studies, discussions, and collective analyses. The goal was to define a unified vision of Vino Nobile, also supported by technical research: on one side, geological and soil studies building on the zoning work initiated in the 1990s with the Enogea map; on the other, historical research carried out in archives and libraries, tracing records back to the 19th-century Leopoldine Cadastre.

The “Pieve” wine expresses the territory through clearly defined subzones, with a blend based on Sangiovese and only native grape varieties permitted by the production regulations, using exclusively estate-grown grapes. An internal committee of oenologists and technicians will carry out a preliminary verification to ensure compliance with the production rules.

The combined studies led to the identification of 12 UGAs (Additional Geographical Units), indicated on the label with the mention “Pieve,” as a testament to the historical and territorial identity of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
