The Movimento Turismo del Vino, chaired by Violante Gardini Cinelli Colombini, presents the results of a survey conducted in November 2025 among more than 300 member wineries across Italy. The analysis explores the reasons behind the relatively low presence of foreign tourists at Italian wineries. Fewer than 10% of the approximately 106 million international travelers who arrived in Italy in 2025 visited a winery—an interesting contrast with the strong global interest in food and wine experiences.
Within the wineries of the Movimento—considered a representative sample of Italy’s leading wine tourism offerings—the share of international visitors ranges between 35% and 40% of total guests, with higher percentages in Central and Southern Italy.
The study, conducted by Professor Antonello Maruotti for CESEO – Centro Studi Enoturistici e Oleoturistici at LUMSA University and chaired by Dario Stefàno, highlights the significant role played by practical conditions of access and their perception in the gap between the desire to experience a wine tourism activity and the actual opportunity to do so.
