Alto Adige: Alpine Wines with Mediterranean Charm
Seminar/tasting for the press and wine trade: EOS Hall, Palaexpo,Sunday, 6st April 2007, 10am-1pmAn interesting tasting and discussion on wines from the Alto Adige (Südtirol in German), one of Italy’s smallest wine-growing areas and the country’s northernmost, located in the heart of the Southern Alps. The vineyards are sited at altitudes between 200 and 1,000 metres above sea level.
Red varieties include Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet, while Lagrein and Vernatsch (Schiava) are autochthonous. These two varieties yield their finest wines from vineyards in the Bolzano valley basin and around the Lake of Kaltern/Caldaro.
Alto Adige’s most popular white wines are produced from the varieties Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Kerner, Riesling, Moscato Giallo and the native aromatic Gewürztraminer.
